RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
